As part of this work, a brick memorial wall, with built in seating, was erected that also recorded the names of all the people buried in the cemetery. By 1984 the cemetery grounds were in a state of disrepair and the Stratford Borough Council decided to tidy the area up, remove the grave surrounds and put in new plantings.

The last recorded burial took place 70 years later when Cuthbert Hargreaves Taylor was buried on. The cemetery at Kopuatama, east of Stratford, was laid out in 1905 and the Stratford Cemetery was closed to all, apart from those who already owned a plot there. In 1900 the Stratford Borough Council discussed the need for a new cemetery and the original cemetery was enlarged. The first recorded burial, that of Mortimer Frederick Hassell is said to have been on. Those in more outlying areas were simply buried on their farms. Up to this time, residents in the area were buried at Midhirst. It appears that when the town was laid out, provision for a cemetery was made in Regan St but for some reason it did not open until 1885. The town of Stratford was surveyed in 1877-78.
